Working Man Blues
Thursday April 14, 2011
Like most folks, I haven’t discovered the secret to making a living from my hobby. That four letter word “work” has been getting in the way of my astronomy hobby for far too long and it’s time to take back my free time.
I have a box full of excuses. Really I do. Everything from learning new web technologies and languages (so I can make cool sites like this one) to suffering through the wettest winter on record in the Peoria area (over 65” of snowfall this winter). Ask me why I haven’t done something and I’ll start tossing out excuses faster than you can absorb them.
The time for excuses is over and it’s time to get back outside with the scope and get observing. My grab and go scope is “under maintenance” at the moment. I have it stripped down to bare metal awaiting a new coat of paint. (What did I tell you about that box load of excuses?) To get started again, I need to drag the big dob out from under the tarp, get her polished up and back under the stars. Vanessa and I are attending the Tennessee Spring Star Party later this month and like an out of season athlete, I need to get back in training.
If you come looking for me, check in the backyard first. I’m hoping that’s where you’ll find me if the sky is clear. (Is that the beginnings of an excuse? Naaaah.)
About Me
I am an amateur astronomer who has spent the past decade observing and logging my
perspective on sights in the night sky. When I am not pursing my astronomy hobby,
I am working as a professional geek designing software and systems.

At 167x with the 11mm eyepiece in the 368mm reflector, NGC 1333 appears as a very faint, diffuse patch of light extending north of a bright star. Averted vision reveals that the northern edge of the diffusion is slightly brighter. The diffusion curves slightly to the west.
